okay, so i've updated, which means that i'm unemployed again and looking for work. finished my backyardigans gig at guru about two months ago, relaxed a bit and now i'm antsy, so I updated my reel with backyardigans goodness and a couple of extra animations. for those who've seen my old demo reels, the first one with the princess bride sound clip will look familiar, but i fixed it up with a different rig and hopefully better animation. by the way, i privated or deleted my old demo reels because they're terrible and even more embarrassing than the reel i just posted above.

the next time i post something i'll likely be unemployed again. or i've got something worth blogging about. and if anyone actually read this, you are cool.

not quite november, like i said last time, but it doesn't make much of a difference considering the amount of updates this blog gets anyway. here is a new post, because i got my demo reel stuff from my gig on super why! and now i've updated my demo reel. that song from that cinderella episode will forever be ingrained in my psyche. thanks, c.o.r.e., you're so clever.

updates: i'm be starting work at guru studio in the middle of january, working on the fourth season of the backyardigans. so i'm gonna have more songs in my head, but that's okay because i'm not a music snob, or even a coolness snob. and i get to animate dancing, which is actually fun. i'm really looking forward to it. my little cousins love the show so i get to show off too.

the next time you'll hear from me is probably when i'm unemployed again, so, till then.

Mr. Elephant Goes to Work

uh, hey everyone, here's mr. elephant goes to work. yes, the full film. more than a year since i've graduated, i finally put it on the youtube. anyway, i figure most people who actually read this blog (when i actually post) have already seen the film, but whatever, i just felt like posting it.

what's new with me? well, i just finished my gig at c.o.r.e. digital pictures; time to be lookin' for another job. for now i'm be travelling for the next two and a half weeks, so that should be nice. i can't put my super why stuff on my reel until the end of november--that's probably the next time i'll post.

so, i haven't posted since september, mainly 'cause i haven't had anything new to post up. finally just got some demo reel footage from my work on Urban Vermin, though, so i thought i'd just slap it onto my demo reel. and here it is. only a couple of scenes, though; i worked on the show for the final couple of episodes.

just to update people on what i've been up to...nothing much, really. got hired back to c.o.r.e., animating on a preschool show called super why. check it out for some edumacational goodness, weekdays 9:00 am on cbc or pbs. (oh, and urban vermin, fridays 3:30 pm on ytv. not that i get anything from plugging the shows.)

anyway, at c.o.r.e. till september '08, so i guess we'll see what happens after, then. still submitting the elephant film to various festivals, dunno if it'll be accepted or not, but wish me luck.

wow, it's september and i don't have to go back to school. awesome.

anyway, just to let you all know, Mr. Elephant Goes to Work is gonna be screening at the Ottawa International Animation Festival on saturday, september 22 at 1:00pm at the National Gallery of Canada, as one of the finalists for the TELETOON Animation Scholarship. bunch'a friends' films gonna be on there too, so it should be sweeeet.

this is gonna be the first time i've ever been to the ottawa festival. by the way, who's going to the festival? i hope i'll be seeing some of you there.

update: just saw that Mr. Elephant got an audience choice award at VisionFest. pretty nifty. no money though, haha.

End of the Year

(long post warning. cheese warning.)

yeah, so...school's done. forever. 5 years at sheridan, finally over. it still hasnt really sunk in. things have turned out pretty good at the end. while last year was a good experience (for me), this year was even better; working on my own film, working the way i like to work. i should really treasure this experience, because this is most likely the last time i can ever do something like this on my own terms (for the most part).

lots of sleepless nights and crazy hours have finally culminated into a film i'm actually okay with. (dunno if it's "crazy awesome"--refer to my huge end-of-3rd-year post). i actually got it done, yay...one weird thing i realized is that i pretty much only worked 4 days a week for the entire year (travel home friday, sleep saturday, church sunday, no work at all in between). but during those 4 days that i did work, i worked my butt off. the time in between really helped keep me sane, i think.

"entering the industry", something we've talked about so many times over, is a pretty daunting thing for me at the moment. everything's changing now, i'm not really sure what to do at this point, but i guess i'll figure it out. i'm pretty sure we'll all do fine, though. i'm really really proud of our year and the work that we turned out. i'm sure others share the same sentiment. we got some real talented people here.

i guess i'm gonna miss school; not just the freedom (relative to what's coming), but especially the people in our year. i've learned something from everyone i've ever talked to (or from conversations i listened in to while working), and had some good times. hope everyone can keep in touch, i wanna know where everyone's at. (at the risk of sounding pathetic...get facebook, look me up. add me on msn. gimme your blog url. etc.)

can't post without including some images, so up above are pages from my "portfolio" that i had to hand in to pass so i can actually get outta school. for those of you lookin' for some mr. elephant goes to work goodness, check back in a few days, i'm finally gonna post it up on youtube since it's finally been screened and i've handed out copies everywhere anyway.

these are the characters/props that i've modeled myself for my film, with the exception of mr. monkey, which is coming soon.

that said, i need more character models from people who are willing to donate their models for the film. if you have one that you won't mind inflicting some hurt on mr. elephant, email me at johannes_uy(at)hotmail.com. i need about ten to fifteen more models, and kind or style will do, the most they'd show up is about 7-8 frames. but you'll still get credit, of course.

(considering the number of people who actually see this blog, i guess asking here is a long shot, eh.)

i didnt spend too much time on it at all, since he's only gonna show up for a few seconds anyway. but, some day, i may make a really short film about mr. bird since he's so awesome.

finally, a new post.

here's a quick walk cycle i did today with the newly-rigged mr. elephant. theres no secondary action with the ears, the tie and the trunk, but i whipped this up in about 15 minutes, so gimme a break, eh. i still got some more blend shapes to do, but otherwise the elephant's good to go, which is pretty nice. (oh, and a shout out to lianna, the president of the mr. elephant fan club, who's been dying to see some elephant action for some time now, heck yeah.)

wow, a mr. elephant post. that's my 4th year film, for those who dont know. here are some renders of the bugger--who's not rigged yet, hence the awesome scarecrow impersonation. it should finally give some of you a idea of how the film's gonna look, because i'm so lazy with the concept art and all. the whole film's gonna be blue, by the way.

next up is finalizing leica, making blend shapes, and rigging. the plan is to start animating by january, february latest. ive edited the leica some more, and changed the whole ending. ill post it up next week when its done.

A Present for the Eiffel Tower and Other Stuff

my group film project from last year, A Present for the Eiffel Tower, was uploaded by jessie on youtube a little while ago. check it out if you want. the film was done by me, bora moon, leslie chan and jessie lam.

also, i watched this neat little film called Renaissance recently. check that out too, if you can. totally black & white, 3d motion-capture film. it's pretty nifty.

i also came across this thing while flipping through channels on tv one time and i was so taken aback by how ugly the thing was that i just had to look it up. it's called Jay Jay the Jet Plane, and it's the ugliest 3D show i've ever seen. i mean, just look at the character designs, they're kinda freaky. and the rigs are horrible, as well as the animation. the geometry shears whenever their heads bob, and there's a lot of head bobbing. anyway, enough of that.

while channel surfing another time, i saw this show on ytv (i think) and it caught my eye as i immediately saw that it was motion captured. it's called Jane and the Dragon. i've only seen one episode but it's pretty alright, except for the main character's hair. and it's co-produced by nelvana and weta, which is cool.

i dont believe i've mentioned my favourite kids show, Pocoyo, on this blog yet. it's my favourite kids show. the animation, design, sound...everything is awesome. i'm trying to find the dvd. watch some episodes on youtube... go now.

that's all for now. nope, nothing new from me or my film.

here's the latest version of the story reel of Mr. Elephant Goes to Work. it was originally 9 minutes long two years ago, it was 4:29 mins last week and now it's 5:21. i really liked my 9 minute version (i guess every one else liked it too) and still feel that it's the strongest version i have. i'm not as happy with this 5-minute one. i'd still like to make it into a 2-minute story, but i'm not really sure how without totally abandoning the spirit of the 9-minute version, and i'm not sure if it's even possible. so, yeah, i got a lot of work cut out for me.

here's my demo reel. it's pretty much a combination of some 2D stuff from sheridan and those wal-mart dude things that i made at my time at red rover studios. i've improved most of the animations and pumped the model up to a higher res. i showed it to one of the guys at red rover (the one who usually watches the reels that people send in), and he said that i would have no problem getting a job (and for me probably any job would do) with this reel, and it's better than 80% of the stuff he gets. that was pretty encouraging, let me tell ya. so after 3 months at red rover, this is what i ended up with.

Co-op started

so, co-op (at Red Rover Studios) started a couple of days ago, but since i don't really have a supervisor or anything to do at the moment, i've just been playing around with 3D Studio Max. From what I've seen so far, I still like maya a lot better, or maybe just cuz I'm used to it.

here's my first animation. found the rig in the tutorials; it isn't great, but it'll have to do for now. the animation ain't that great either...i'm still getting used to 3DSMax, i guess.

School's Out

so, 3rd year at sheridan college is over. it feels very weird. things have gone from working on the film at school till 2am almost every day to not having anything to do. it's really bizzare. well, at least my group got the film done; for those of you who don't know, I worked on the film A Present for the Eiffel Tower, which turned out alright, I think. here's a few of the scenes that I animated on the film, which is just slapped together and posted for all of you to see:

so, this year was a fun year, despite us being the first year to do these kinds of group films, and it wasn't at all even close to being perfect. i kind of like the fact that we're the guinea pigs of this BAA program, in the sense that we get to chart out a lot of new territory, and are as much experimenters as the people running the program. i figure that when the 2nd years start their group films next year, they're gonna have a whole load of new rules, restrictions, criteria and stuff they have to do, to avoid the mess this year was for us 3rd years. that might seem better, but I think I would have had a lot less fun than I did this year, because we worked pretty much on our own terms, our own way; we got to make (many) mistakes, and I really learned a lot this year cuz of that.

well, i really couldn't have survived this year without my group (We'll Fix it Later Productions, we called ourselves for some reason): Leslie, Bora and Jessie, just the four of us got the flippin film done ... i really appreciate being in class B, cuz we actually do rock, hopefully we'll still be together next year ... because of this group format this year, i met a lot of people that i otherwise wouldn't have had much chance to talk to; i'm afraid it won't be the same next year, cuz most of us will probably work at home, which sucks for people like me who like having people around ... it seemed like hell at the time, but i actually enjoyed being at the school chilling, napping, talking to people, working on the film all day and night ... i think i'm finally tired of tim horton's chilli ... finally, i cannot talk about 3rd year without mentioning:

we should have another tournament next year, so i can defend my title (even though i'm not really the champion--i only had to face four out of sixteen people). anyway, look at the pic above. see that girl on the left? she totally let that dude win, like, three times. and he still couldn't win until now. wipe that smile off your face, stupid kid.

i'm looking forward to next year, workin on my own film, Mr. Elephant Goes to Work, and i'm gonna really try to make it crazy awesome. as i start working on it, i'm gonna have a lot more things to put on this blog. i think i'm gonna need someone else to rig and model my main character, though, so if you know any good riggers who're willing to work for free (or cheap) and get their name big splattered all over my credits, let me know. i really want to be able to focus on the performance and acting, and i dont want a career as a rigger, so if i make my own crappy rig of mr. elephant, i don't think i'd be able to make him act the way i want him to.

so what's next? i'm gonna be workin at Red Rover Studios for co-op starting monday, may 1st. theyre an awesome company, so i'm really looking forward to it, and hopefully i will learn a lot of stuff and have a good time too.

wow, this was a long post, i'm actually treating this thing like a blog. i wonder how many people actually read this blog, it's kinda hard to tell. anyway, i'll try to keep this thing updated more than i have recently.

so, anyway, it's the end of 3rd year. i'm gonna miss it. hopefully 4th year will be good to me too.

I was looking through my old junk in my computer and I found these things. This is the "character opens a box" part of the Sheridan College animation program entrance portfolio thing. And looking back at the rest of my portfolio, I can't believe I got in.

Man, that was a while ago. I don't even remember the cat's name, or if he even had a name. If anyone knows the name, comment so that I can be put out of my misery.

fred again. this time it's a walk cycle. one of the gripes i have about this model is that you can't bend his arm the "wrong" way (at least in ik mode).

i wonder, now that we're all applying (or should be) for co-op jobs, if people out there in the industry are getting pretty tired of seeing fred from almost every single sheridan animation student.
